While the director of Elden Ring Nightrign prioritizes three player and solo experiences from Soft, those who prefer to take on the night’s challenges as the pair wins duo-focused “post-launch support”
You can play Nightreign as a duo from the gate, as long as you don’t mind matching up with a random third wheel and configuring your team. Those who play solo will find the two strangers dictated by gaming law are incredibly skilled or totally hopeless.

Speaking to IGN, Nightrign Director Ishizaki Junya was asked why Duo doesn’t have the option to drop into the game immediately if necessary for Duo to appear in the two-man game.
“The simple answer is that this was simply overlooked during development as an option for two players. So we are very sorry about that,” Ishizaki reiterated that the three-person team in the game naturally promotes and playing solo play is the two options that make the most sense for the studio to focus, especially when it comes to balance.
“We put in a lot of effort into creating this experience that is playable for solo players as much as the rules and the new system allowed,” he explained.
That makes sense. Trios actions are “the core of Nightreign,” so that should be the main focus. SoftGames is well known for allowing solo bosses. You only have finite time and resources, so the couple takes the back seat.
Ishizaki outlined the kind of work that has come to check individual players’ games a little more reliably in interviews, saying, “Solo play is generally encouraged and a natural part of the game loop, but for those solo players, this may be difficult to notice in multiplayer, but it makes sure that either player is antagonistic like the taste. And generally, when you’re playing a single player, the parameters will be dynamically adjusted according to the number of players in that session.”
