Cult classic FPS Painkiller is back with a huge RTX overhaul

More than 20 years later, original Pain medicine i’m back. The brutal shooter coming out from the back of games like Quake, Doom, Serious Sam, this demonic FPS is definitely not talking about much, despite what we should absolutely do. With some giant bosses, gorgeous levels, and various weapons, the game loses almost time. Until then, this painkiller RTX Mod has been updated recently, and it is a completely revamping experience of feeling completely new.

Pain killers are the definition of a cult classic FPS game. Released in 2004, developer People’s shooter blends the fast-paced action of doom and trembling with dirty Gothic stories filled with truly excellent guns. You’re playing as Daniel Garner. If Daniel wants to be purified, he doesn’t need to get there because he needs to prevent a war between heaven and hell.

In my opinion, Painkiller is still absolutely worth trying in 2025, especially for its level of breadth and enemy width. You can explore cemeteries, prisons, opera houses and more along with gangs of bikers, samurai and zombies. The game also has many physics interactions. This comes a very long way to improve the overall experience by bringing you into the world.

However, if you want to try painkillers with modern visual upgrades, you can definitely do it. Breaking all-new life into the game for the shooter of the PainKiller RTX Remix in V0.1.6 uploaded ‘BINQ_ADAMS’ in April. New video from Digital Foundry shows all the overhauled shooters of its glory. I’ll admit that this doesn’t look like a game from two years ago.

Just watching the Digital Foundry video will tell you that the PainKiller RTX will greatly enhance the lighting of the original game. More shadows bounce around the level and a general improvement in how the light actually works will help many objects stand out in the environment. If you’ve seen the overhaul of the Half-Life 2 RTX and played it, the painkillers work is somewhat similar. It’s also worth keeping in mind that this RTX project is a work in progress, but it can be enough to give it a try right now.

Interestingly, this RTX version of Painkiller is not the only revival of the game. Developers Anshar Studios and Publisher 3D Realms are rebooting the modern series as Gothic cooperative shooters. You need to take on the role of champion and stop the fallen angel Azazel from unleashing the horde of demons on Earth.

If you want to try PainKiller RTX yourself, you can find assets in MODDB here, and the original 2004 game is also available on Steam.

If you want more, there are also some of the best horror and cooperative games to play right now.
