Despite low Steam turnout, Doom: The Dark Ages is id Software's most popular game at launch, clearly thanks to Game Pass

It’s been almost a week since Doom: The Dark Ages, the latest entry in ID Software’s classic shooter series, the third in the game trilogy that began with the 2016 reboot, Dark Ages: The Dark Ages: The Dark Ages: The Dark Ages: The Dark Ages, the latest entry.

Critics loved it, but it’s hard to shake up the feeling that the launch felt a bit settled down with a new major fate, and the lowest number of steam players out of any of the three most recent games seemed less successful than the previous entries. But that was only part of the story.

As mentioned in the same piece covering the steam numbers for Doom: The Dark Ages, those numbers do not reflect what’s going on with the PlayStation or Xbox console. Importantly, however, your PC or Xbox doesn’t even include a Game Pass player.

Dark Ages is a big release of Game Pass, and while Microsoft wants to sell copies to players in the old fashioned way, the company is also keen to increase Game Pass membership. This is part of the reason we are hearing more and more about player numbers, and it’s not necessarily raw sales.

It brings us to today’s news. Bethesda has announced that Doom: The Dark Ages is “the biggest launch in the history of IDs.” More specifically, it managed to reach 3 million players seven times faster than Doom Eternal – previously held that record.

Bethesda no longer reveals, but the numbers include sales and Game Pass members who tried out the game. More than 2 million out of 3 million people are on Xbox, according to analyst company Ampere (via Christopher Dring). This is another indication of the REACH of the Xbox Game Pass – it also includes the traditional copies sold.

If you’re one of the millions of players who have jumped into the Dark Ages (or will soon) into the Dark Ages, our massive DOOM: The Dark Ages Guide continues to receive more updates.
