Downhill is a fourth wall breaking action RPG whose protagonist knows you exist, and might not agree with your actions

Perhaps one of the most fascinating parts of an RPG is that it combines with other characters, right? For example, in games like the Persona series, you build relationships with player characters with different peers. What I don’t say is that you are a person who has a direct relationship with the character you are playing, especially common. This is where downhills come into play. This is the fourth wall-breaking action RPG where the hero knows you exist and control them. Meanwhile, we must find a way to save the world.

“The idea of power and its abuse is at the heart of downhill,” explains Sisterhood Games, the developer of downhill, on the game’s Kickstarter page. “Every time I start a new RPG game, I have full control over my character, but what happens if the character has his own will? What’s more, what happens if it often clashes with your playthrough vision?”

The fourth wall break in an indie RPG is nothing new. It is a game cited as inspiration, along with the way OneShot communicates directly to players. But what sells me downhill is how I build a relationship with the main character Fade. Do you want to help her in the way you can, or do you want to fight her? You can talk to her at any time during the entire game. There are a variety of dialogue options that will affect your way of thinking.

That might mean doing something simple, like asking her what she is like, or forcing her to fight her against the enemy. I’m not saying that what’s nuanced is the name of the game here. It will obviously become a game that will question your role in the way the game is played. I really like every presentation of it. There’s a truly unique dark fantasy aesthetic with some good, creepy looking creatures to fight, and the twist of the RPG dialogue options is fun to talk to with your own characters.

Fades can be revived multiple times without loading saved data, but this comes with the cost that causes her mental distress. Obviously you can’t tell everything without playing from the game, but certainly it seems thoughtful about how common mechanics affect the characters you play. Something good!

As mentioned before, the game is currently looking for funds on Kickstarter, so if you want to have fantasy, you can chuck a few Quids. It can also be used on Steam’s WishList. Also, if you’re not sure enough to support your fundraiser yet, take a look at the short demonstration.
