The Super Earth battle, kicked off in the Heart of Democracy Update in Helldivers 2, concluded last week, allowing players to dodge the lighting invasion of their home planet. One of the two cities that ultimately ended up opposing the hostile squid was equality in the Chinese version of the in-game map, which led the shooters to produce local news reports in the country.
Following the big victory of Super Earth, as players on Helldivers 2 Subreddit discovered, the Good Morning Shanghai Anchors of Chinese broadcaster Kanka News led a short segment on these recent developments in the game. Based on translations by Reddit users with handle Atypical Gamemaker (a profile that claims to be a Chinese game developer), the report discussed the defense of equality of the SEA, in honour of both Chinese and non-Chinese players working together to protect the city.
In some contexts, the city of equality and prosperity Super Earth Capital was the only Super Earth City standing after the invasion. The former defense sparked a bit of controversy. A relatively few players reviewed Heldy Bar 2 in the bombing and were unable to push the city’s defence rate to 100%, meaning it is completely under their control.
Members of the gaming community suggested that the root of this is that Shanghai is in-game in the real world, and that Chinese players are in-game to take its defenses very seriously. The suspicion of the confusion in translation with the Chinese version of the game appears to have convinced these players that the city can be fully freed while the battle with Super Earth is still ongoing.
That last bit wasn’t really the case. While the invasion was underway, there was a constant stream of fresh lighting forces, making it impossible to secure a fully-established mega city at that stage of the lawsuit. Cue players are frustrated because they believed that in-game efforts had no dynamic impact on how the war was unfolding, and some accused developer Arrowhead of leading the railway to a certain outcome.
The translation hints at this obvious misunderstanding, saying that the news anchor praised the two players for not tracking the “script” of Arrowhead’s Galactic Wars and “fighting for their own story in an honorable way.”
On the other hand, I really like the way the report explains the final stages of a big fight for Super Earth. “Chinese players used excellent shooting skills and strategic planning to fight enemies and enemies during the day,” Anchor said, “U.S. players took over night operations, leveraging air drops and firepower to build air drops and firepower to build Shangay line of defense.
“This big unity between Chinese and American netizens had a happy ending on the 30th.” Nice.
