Mario Kart World began development in 2017 as the original Switch game, but it eventually became Switch 2. The developer also provided some information about its most important character, the cow.

This information comes from a new interview with Nintendo, which has been split into four parts: Mario Kart’s world producer Yabuki, programming director Kenta Sato, Ishikawa’s art director Ishikawa, planning team lead Shintalogikumaru, and music lead Ashkoa Asahi Atokoa Tokoa Tsukoa Island. Even though Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is in development, I was thinking about what to do for my next Mario Kart game. We started prototyping in March 2017,” explained Yabuki. With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I felt that I was able to complete the formula I had followed in the series up until that point when players raced on individual courses. So this time I started creating world maps like this because I wanted the gameplay to involve players running around the big world. ”
“When I was developing it for Nintendo’s Switch System,” Sato further explained in the chat.
“Yabuki-San first brought in the idea of switching to Switch 2 around 2020. At the time, we were already thinking about the expected specifications for the next system, but it wasn’t long after we actually received the work development unit. Until then, we had to proceed with development based on tentative estimates.”

“Of course the graphics had to be more detailed (as they are on Switch 2),” Ishikawa added.
The developer also explained how the driving cow turned out and got a glimpse into her… uh… way of thinking.
“The new Mario Kart game features new characters to race, but I added a lot to the previous game, so I wondered where I could go from there,” Ishikawa explained. (laughs) So that’s when we realised that there actually were a lot of undeveloped resources around the course. ”
MK World’s Devs calls out these environmental decorative characters behind the handle called “NPC Drivers.” Yabuki says, “It’s pretty funny to see a four-legged cow holding the handlebars of a motorcycle with her front hooves.”
However, Ishikawa claimed that he was “still in contact with the nature of her animal” due to the pose she was supposed to when she jumped, so she was a “pivotal character in the Mario Kart series” as a legacy of giving other characters ideas to the developers.
