Nioh 3 officially revealed – and it's not a PlayStation exclusive, even if there's a demo you can only play on PS5

As part of the PlayStation State of Play, it was treated to the surprise release of the next game in the NIOH Action RPG series. It’s simply titled Nioh 3 and will change much of what we know about Nioh.

NIOH 2 is scheduled to be released in early 2026.

First of all, the game is not a timed style PlayStation-Exclusive. When it arrives next year, it will be available on both PC and PS5 at the same time. The even more surprising news is, sadly, the demo is only available on the PS5.

This is an alpha demo. This means there will be at least one demo (beta) before launch. The demonstration is only available until Wednesday, June 18th.

Nioh 3 will be held during the Sengoku period in Japan, with new protagonists appearing. A young warrior (Tokugawa) is set to become the next shogun. Clearly, Yokai is in the mix here alongside human enemies.

NIOH 3 is described as an “open field” game. This is a major change in the series. It’s interesting that the team’s ninjas didn’t call it a completely open world, but perhaps the negative criticism that Ronin portrayed was portrayed because of its open world structure, so they might have had its hand.

Anyway, the gameplay realm appears to be more open than previous Nioh games, even if the trailer doesn’t show that much.

Perhaps the most interesting details were created in this PlayStation blog post. Nioh3 general producer Yasuda revealed that Combat has two main styles: Samurai and Ninja.

You can switch between both styles on the spot. The Samurai style is described as most similar to other NIOH games, but was not mentioned in the breakdown. The Samurai style comes with a new addition, so it’s not completely similar. This post refers to artistic ability. This increases the power of martial arts, an area that is normally ignored in Nioh games. There is also Deflect. This is effectively a Parry system.

Next is the ninja style, which has faster movements and unlocks many aerial actions. This is where ninjutsu techniques are currently sitting, and some of the abilities discussed include leaving a clone after an attack.

NIOH 3 looks like a big step forward for the series, so we’ll have to wait until we get it to find out if the ninjas on this team have successfully evolved their formula.
