Oblivion is a great game, but do you really need a remaster?
It joined me by asking as rumors and leaks bubbled up, but Bethesda and the Master Games kept the radio silence to an almost hilarious degree. In many ways, it’s an unhelpful question to ask. Apart from new entries in the Burnout series, there are very few video games needed.

The remaster essentially invites existential questions of this kind. All these resources and all of the resources from talented developers all have been wasted delivering a slightly redecorated version of cake that we already enjoy, in the case of forgetting, we can go for a second bite of the original whenever we like.
On the one hand, you can argue that you are entitled to suggest that the game should not get a remaster just because you personally want something else. Again, we are at the weaker end of this power dynamic as consumers. And it’s fine to not continue releasing the same old stuff over and over again in your favorite studio, rather than trying something more interesting.
I thought after regaining my oblivion, these clouds of doubt would simply float when the scamp and dremora dragged me through the gates and into Cyrodil. Of course, this was worth making a remaster, take a look! But they are not. Over 30 hours of unfamiliar games so far, the cloud of doubt is still hanging.
As you have heard without a doubt, the remastered Oblivion is very faithful to the original game. It could be engraved in what many Skyrim-Clone really wanted than we were afraid of. As soon as you launch the remaster – no matter how long it waits, it takes to download a 120-ish mammoth GB that’s bulging – you’ll be hit into a coat of fresh paint.
It’s the exact same state you remember, rendered with all the extra loyalty you would expect from that unrealistic engine 5 icing. Your expectations for good graphics are boasting that many of today’s big games are proud of, they throw socks on the ceiling again. As soon as you leave the sewer system of the Imperial city, you will find a mountain in the distance approaching. If it appears at dawn or dusk, catching the striking sunsets and sunrises like the sunrise that modern technology can offer, or waiting until dusk, it is beneath the detailed star surface and, at first glance towards the bloomers, we can make the Aurora Borealis that we all loved in Skyrim.
Walking around the center of the map, your eyes will return to the faint spires and white gold towers of the Imperial city. Cyrodiil was pretty breathtaking in Potterto’s vision, which is closer to the 2006 cartoon. Especially since the remaster doesn’t reduce the vibrancy of the colours as some of us feared. I want to open up the photo mode that this remaster definitely has, so it looks great for all my peers and can put together some new desktop backgrounds, right? No, that’s not. I had a hard time finding a way in the settings to temporarily dismiss the HUD.
As a result, most of the screenshots I took are from the Oblivion Remastered NPC, which is the much better part of this facelift. It is more realistic in a way that matches their improved environment, but is still incorrect regularly, or Looks strange In a way that perfectly matches the flawed faces of OG twins. There are still many faces that will give you a good laugh, and I don’t do that otherwise. Some of them now have a beard and mustache! When it comes to your character, the stubble option looks appropriately eccentric when stained with non-natural colors. Of course, it only makes it easier to create an absolute monster that rivals the main characters of the original famous horror show.
Sadly, Cyrodiil’s freaks and weirdos aren’t the only junkie bits of the original that remained intact in this game. To be clear – if this remaster sucked up all the yanks from forgetting, it was a tragedy, but as I played, I found not only the classic adorable junk that we all remember so nostalgically, but also many examples of the kind of annoying bugs you’d hoped to fix in the end.

The most notable example was in the heirlooms of the Thieves Guild Quest, Aardalji. You can read the full summary of what happened to me here, but the short version is this. They had to steal the ring so the ring didn’t lay in the box they were supposed to be (OG Oblivion bug). Luckily I’m scrubbing online for the rigging strategy of the old ju umpire who still works in the remaster. Otherwise, they were locked out of running most of the best Questlines in the game.
Also, still getting away from combat is a boundary line – a few times I put what felt like half Cyrodiil between myself and the rest of the hostile threat. Much closer to the funniest junk realm, but still a bit immersed, problems like NPCs wearing skirts with those clothes disappearing left them walking around in the invisible pelvic area. Also, why does poor Vicente Valtieri continue to pop out with eyes that are suddenly completely flapping off and not open? I understand that vampires have some terrible side effects, but there are 9 people!
Apart from these, characters who had to talk to and barter with characters temporarily appeared in a state where they were unable to do so, and were not ideal.
Moving from what’s still there to the rest of the new additions, there’s a short list that I felt actually had a concrete effect on my enjoyment of this game, which I actually loved in its previous form. It’s nice to be able to sprint, but considering Oblivion’s acrobatic skills, jumping anywhere is ten times more fun, like a wild toddler in a bouncy castle.
Bow and spell combat using third-party cameras works as they are. actually It’s been greatly improved to be able to see what you’re about to smash without the characters’ bodies being incredible. The proximity is very similar and still feels very similar despite the addition of a more complicated hit response than the auditory “uuuuuooagghghh”. The most convenient tweak is that the leveling system has to grind up by what you do – hello, all that unnecessary bouncing – but much less punishable when it comes to skills you designate as a minor in the major.

As you begin to progress, you don’t need to focus solely on these core strengths that may turn out to be keys and keys to your build. For me, this was really useful. Because, despite not specifically intentionally doing it as a charismatic dark elf assassin, just selling gear and doing quests led me to appreciate things like Mercantile and Speechcraft quite a bit. That being said, you can argue that something has been lost in the game. This could no longer force me without forcing me to strictly stick to the unique path I chose. I haven’t tried a second playthrough of the remaster yet, but I think my character could become a more Skyrim-esque master in a way that’s more of a power fantasy than the original.
Freely assigning certain skill points when you level up is unlikely to have any potential drawbacks in my book, so you can submit it under a purely positive column. Meanwhile, it is a great boon for the hoarders. Intention Inevitably, there are many times during the playthrough of oblivion. They will not be able to move completely, and instead force them to walk. The updated sneak detection UI, grab mechanics, and the addition of empty container notifications is all very Skyrim, but here we will change some very simple changes.
One particular change I wasn’t a fan of is how I access the local map. You need to zoom completely on a full state map, then press the same button again to take it a step further. Once I know how it does it, that’s fine, but the fact that it took me years to understand what I need to do means that my struggle felt a bit less intuitive as I was a fool.
Apart from that, I think the rest blends in with the background of this remaster intentionally facing and centering, for better or worse. This has always been a goal, and Bethesda issued a later statement confirming it. Approximately four years of development time and masters who saw it have used today’s tools to create an enhanced carriage, carrying a 20-year-old game with complete and unwavering respect. Like the original, it’s fun, but it lies in the context of waiting for Elder Scroll 6 – a follow-up to the game that came out about five years after Forgetting went.

Oblivion Remastered intentionally stops the full remake. It’s something that would have been more likely to be allowed by Bethesda if they wanted to see the creator (or curator) regain their own reinstatement. After all, it’s a whole fresh interpretation of the old game aspects that are at the heart of my plot On the other Forgetful return we’ve got this year, Skyblivion. Rather than trying to remaster games like Morrowind or Daggerfall, you can tell you from experience if you take all this time and resources and use them to re-release forgetfulness.
Using all that new technology, to unlock not only sophisticated versions of what you’ve played and what you can play at any time, but also versions of the game you want to make at any time. Don’t be afraid to make the battle at the Great Gate a proper sight. Show off a massive, bustling trade hub in all the glory you can do, massacre five fools on the Fighters Guild Quest Line before setting fire to the wood.
You and us all breathe a new life appropriately for you and us, who clearly hold the respect and vision of the heart of your studio identity. Sheogorath had the opportunity to invent music and write new symphonies based on stories and adventures in which we fell in love.
The original Oblivion is a great game and this remaster is a good repackage of it. This is an excuse to fire the title of the elder scroll that doesn’t feel millions of miles from the modern age, but we still don’t know if we need it.
