I love my game Steam deckhowever, it’s becoming more and more frustrating to see huge games bypass the handheld as some anti-cheat software doesn’t work well on Linux. This feeling is updated following the release of F1 25, a franchise that cannot be played on steam decks, as long as EA lasts with its own anti-cheat software.
Despite being the best gaming handheld, there are no doubts that the steam deck has its own drawbacks. One big problem is the age of AMD chips that include CPUs and GPUs, and it’s struggling to keep up with modern triple-A games like Doom The Dark Ages. Nevertheless, anti-cheats are the biggest threat to the steam deck advantage, as they already have a major impact on the game library. Also, Steam Deck 2 may have been released on excellent hardware in the end, but it cannot fix this cheek crisis.
Anti-cheat software causes Linux compatibility issues due to differences in kernel level between Windows and Linux. Most developers understand the much larger user base appeal of Microsoft’s operating system, leaving Linux and Steam Deck Gamers in the cold.
The most notable titles at the moment are completely or largely lacking in content, including Grand Theft Auto 5, the EA Sports FC series, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and even Fortnite. These are some of the world’s largest games, and are mostly non-stars other than non-stars on the deck.
This issue is so pronounced that some sites specialize in tracking games using anti-cheat software compatibility with Linux and other niche operating systems. Are we already called anti-cheech? Over 1,100 games are being tracked, and even though they run an anti-cheat system, there are also a number of games that use providers and run at some capacity.
You can see that 15 games use EA anti-cheats, none of which work with any abilities on a steam deck, but 365 games are tracked using simple anti-cheats in only six games considered incompatible, while the future of 193 is classified as “broken”.
In the grand plan of things, we are anti-cheats, but only the total games “rejected” for anti-cheats are listed, while 633 is “broken.” This includes the biggest games, with anti-cheat software, 674 games that don’t work as intended due to the huge number of anti-cheat software.
You need anti-cheat software, which is indisputable, but it’s time to find a solution to this problem. This issue does not rule out people who are quickly becoming a significant part of the market, namely Steam Deck or Steamos users.
As Steam Deck continues to beat gamers and Steamos enters the open beta phase, we hope that as more handhelds will continue to move on to more handhelds, developers will rethink not excluding Linux users.
