Vision Pro is Getting a Major Visual Upgrade to Its ‘Persona’ Avatars

Apple’s “Persona” in Vision Pro is the most Likelife real-time avatar you can find on a headset today, but with the next version of Visionos, they take another step.

Apple today announced that Vision Pro Persona Avatar will receive a major visual upgrade with the launch of the Visionos 26, scheduled for later this year.

Vision Pro personas are generated on-device after the user performs a short scan of the face using the headset. Once generated, the avatar is used for social experiences like FaceTime.

Currently, they are the most realistic real-time avatars available in today’s headsets. They are impressively capturing subtle movements from users, but they always feel a bit blurry or ghostly.

Visionos 26 promises a large visual update that significantly reduces its ghostly appearance and presents a more complete view of the user’s head, including a “full-side profile view.” Apple also promises more realistic hair and lashes, and over 1,000 glasses variations, so glasses lessons can just find what looks right.

Visionos 26 will be available as a developer beta from today, but it is not yet clear whether Persona upgrades will be available in the first version or later in the beta version.

Beyond a visual upgrade to persona, Visionos 26 improves how social experience works with headsets. New developer tools allow you to create co-driven virtual experiences. This means that two headset users in the same physical space can see a shared virtual experience that is visually fixed in the same space for both. That same system allows remote participants to participate as persona avatars, with a mix of face-to-face headset users and remote participants with the same virtual experience.
