The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is a bit distorted with the rankings of games released this year, as far as the overall critical score is concerned. The reason is pretty standard and has something to do with the old game being re-released for the new console.
In this case, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is considered one of the highest rated games of 2025, more than eight years ago, the game first released in 2017.

Of course, Breath of the Wild isn’t just a Switch game that can be played on Switch 2, the console’s successor. It’s also among the few games of choices that Nintendo has chosen to upgrade to take advantage of the power of the new console.
These upgrades apply to Breath of the Wild and are paid for both its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. These are what are called Switch 2 editions (or upgrade packs if you already own them). This doesn’t even include all the DLC in the case of Breath of the Wild. Of course, releasing a new edition means getting another shot by charting the charts among the most highly acclaimed games of the year. This is exactly what happened.
The big metacrite list for the top-rated games of 2025 has “new” participants. Breath of the Wild now sits at number one and is tied to the excellent Claire obscurity: Expedition 33 – New Game actually It was released in 2025. The Breath of the Wild moves ahead of the Blue Prince, another release considered to be a 2025 release.
As it stands, Expedition 33 has been at the top with a total of 93 MC scores, and now splits the fiction with 93 Breath of the Wild, 92 Blue Prince and 91, with Death Delotes finishing the top five with an 89 MC score.
Obviously, the new arrivals inevitably knock out existing games from each slot. Breath of the Wild knocked 100 lines out of the top 20, for example.
Given its development, it is very likely that the same list will be updated soon when the Kingdom’s Tears Switch 2 edition, which is currently even better, is now at 94MC. This means that the 2023 game will soon be the highest rated release of 2025 on Metallic.
